With all our jigging pictures, every efort is taken to get the fish released alive. We believe we have an 90% success rate releasing doggies back to the water in a healthy condition. We caught a lot of doggies out in the Coral Sea, but only photographed the really big ones as a general rule. We preferred to not get the smaller sub 40kg fish out of the water at all as this aids in release.

The fish must be out of the water no longer than 30 seconds to give them a chance, and they are all swum prior to release. If this is done and the deck hose kept in their mouth most fish do swim of quite strongly. The other interesting point was that we only had about 5 doggies in the whole month in the Coral Sea eaten by sharks, which was very pleasing.

Some fish are released with the aid of a downrigger to help with decompression
