The GT fishing, jigging, flyfishing and general sportfishing at Lizard Island is conducted from our 80ft Mothership and 2 x 36ft sportfishers, as well as our 2 x 18ft guided centre console sportfishers. On our GT and sportfishing trips at Lizard Island, we cater for a maximum of 12 anglers fishing between these 4 vessels.
The fishing for GTs spanish mackerel, coral trout, dogtooth tuna and red bass is superb in these areas. Big GTs, up to 50kgs, and lots of them can be expected while popper fishing, and spanish mackerel around 25kgs are a common catch. Deep jigging the outer edge of the northern barrier reef also produces lots of doggies between 30-70kgs.
Lizard Island is really the pickup and drop off point for these trips, as you'll spend most of your trip fishing a different reef every day, starting around 30 miles north of Lizard Island. The reefs and islands around Lizard Island are the feature of this fishery, you'll be fishing the Great Barrier Reef to the north of Lizard Island, and this area never gets fished by anyone else. On many of the reefs we visit, you'll be amongst the first to ever cast a popper.
Due to the use of our mothership, we can access the reefs to the north of Lizard Island, where other smaller gameboats just can't access due to lack of fuel and facilities. So even though we might only be fishing 30-60 miles from Lizard Island
you'll most likely not see another boat for the whole week unless we are staying near Lizard Island.
The Lizard Island GT and sportfishing trips are based on a 5 day/6 night package, and depending on the schedule, you should get at least 5 full days fishing, and most likely 2 half days as well, making a total of 6 days fishing.
Our package dates cater for 5 full days fishing around Lizard Island. we have one block of dates available for 6-8 anglers for 2007, these are the 14th-20th October 2007. Dates for 2008 are as follows:-
12th - 19th October
19th - 25th October
25th - 31st October.
31st October - 6th November
