Kenn and Wreck Reef Details
A visit to Kenn and Wreck Reefs can only be described as like visiting another planet. This area is completely unique. Kenn and Wreck Reef are a similar distance from hamilton Island, and we visit both reefs at the same time of year, as part of the same block of trips, with a few weeks at each reef.

Kenn Reef is the most distant reef from any land that we visit, closely followed by Wreck Reef, with the 2 locations being about 65 miles apart. Kenn and Wreck Reefs are located on the Kenn Plateau in the Coral Sea.They are the only reefs located on this plateau, and as such have developed some unique characteristics. The fishing at both reefs is truly spectacular. They feature the greatest variety of species of any reef that we visit, and all of the Coral Sea species are in abundance. Wahoo and yellowfin tuna are in plague proportions during our annual visit in July/August, with an average size of 25-30kgs. Giant trevally, dogtooth tuna, coral trout, red bass green jobfish and a huge variety of other species are also available at both of these locations.

We only spend 4 weeks per year at these reefs as part of our Coral Sea Ultimate Adventures package. Due to its distance from land we also only cater for 10 clients each week, as this is the maximum we can carry on the floatplanes. Utilising our 80ft mothership, anchored in the best anchorage in the Coral Sea, our 2 x 36ft sportfishing vessels range of 18-25ft centre consoles. Your trip to Kenn or Wreck Reef will be something truly special and something you will long remember. Some of the fishing features of Kenn and Wreck Reef are as follows:-

  • Awesome jigging and trolling for very large dogtooth tuna. We've caught them here jigging and trolling up to 90kgs.
  • Some of the best GT fishing we have ever seen in the Coral Sea has been at Kenn Reef. We released 144 GTs in 4 days with the biggest landed going near 60kgs. We caught 40 GTs over 30kgs in these 4 days.
  • Both reefs have prolific wahoo in July/August, ranging from 60-100lbs, and we've had over 40 wahoo hooked up on fly in one day. We released 266 wahoo in 2 days on conventional gear, and none of those were under 60lbs, with the biggest well over 100lbs. And did we mention a double hookup on a 70lb wahoo on fly and a 500lb black marlin at the same time!!!! If you like flyfishing, wahoo, marlin or GTs, then you need to check out these reefs.
  • Light tackle fishing inside the lagoons for coral trout, red bass, dogtooth tuna and and the other usual suspects is simply superb.
  • The bluewater action for wahoo, yellowfin tuna, sailfish, black and blue marlin is excellent. We've caught 3 species of billfish in a day on numerous occasions at Kenn Reef, and the mixture of these pelagic species in such abundance makes for some amazing action.
  • During our visit each year at Kenn Reef an amazing event occurs where one of the lagoons drains out a single tiny channel at low tide. Fishing from the coral on these few special days is one of the most amazing experiences anyone could ever have. To be casting for 25kg GTs and 10kg coral trout in crystal clear waters and have the fish hitting your lure at your feet is something very special. Please ask us about the right dates for your trip if this is of interest.

Kenn is located approximately 295 nautical miles to the ESE of Hamilton Island on the central northern Queensland coast of Australia. The reef stretches around 15nm from north to south and nearly 10nm from east to west. Wreck Reef is 16 nautical miles from east to west, and only a few miles north to south.

Dates for 2009

We have found that Frederick Reef offers similar fishing options to both Wreck Reef and Kenn Reef, and is far easier to access in the seaplane. As such, we will only be visiting Frederick Reef during the 2009 season. We plan a return to Kenn and Wreck Reefs for the 2010 season.

If you would like to make a booking for Frederick Reef, please contact us.
