Flinders Reef Details
Flinders Reef is one of the best locations in the Coral Sea from which to target giant black marlin, while still having the ability to experience all the other amazing fishing on offer in the Coral Sea. We only visit this reef as part of our Coral Sea Ultimate Adventures package, utilising our 80ft mothership, 2 x 36ft sportfishing vessels, and range of 18-25ft centre consoles. For more information on all of the travel options, boats used and other planning requirements for this reef, please check out the Coral Sea Ultimate Adventures pages.
We fish Flinders Reef with our 80ft mothership, 2 x 36ft gameboats and 2 x 18ft centre console sportfishers, catering for up to 12 anglers per week. Your fishing time at Flinders will be shared between the 36ft vessels and the 18ft vessels, allowing you to experience every aspect of fishing at this amazing reef. The anchorages at Flinders Reef are reasonably good in all but severe weather, and the 2 seperate reefs that make up Flinders, provide a huge variety of fishing options. Our trips to Flinders Reef are interchangeable with Holmes Reefs, because the 2 reefs are so close together, and both reefs provide similar fishing options. Some of the fishing options at Flinders Reef are as follows:-
- Excellent fishing for giant black marlin, and in good numbers. This area is equal to if not better than Lizard Island for targetting giant black marlin. This area is statistically proven over the last 40 years as one of the best locations on earth to catch a 1000lb+ marlin. The best we've seen so far is 8 marlin in a day between 400-900lbs. You can expect to see fish well over 1000lbs in the waters around Holmes and Flinders Reefs as well.
- The Jigging and trolling for very large dogtooth tuna is awesome around these reefs. We've caught them here jigging and trolling up to 90kgs. Often while marlin fishing we will run a minnow to catch yellowfin tuna for livebait for marlin, and it is common on this lure to catch 60kg dogtooth tuna and 40 kg wahoo. The bycatch while marlin fishing has produced many "fish of a lifetime" captures for our anglers.
- There is excellent GT fishing around these reefs, and while we have not landed GTs here as big as at other reefs, there is a lot of them here, and the best we've seen so far is around 50kgs - still very large.
- Light tackle fishing inside the lagoons for coral trout, red bass, dogtooth tuna and and the other usual suapects is simply superb from the 18ft skiffs. Fishing in one of the 18ft skiffs at Flinders Reef produced the biggest dogtooth tuna we have ever seen, a beast estimated at around 110kgs.
Our 2007 and 2008 dates for Flinders and Holmes Reef are fully booked at this stage.
If you would like to make a booking for any of these dates, please contact us.
