Frederick Reef

Frederick Reef is completely unique. It is the only reef we visit which has a massive seamount located 15nm north of the reef system and anchorage. This massive seamount, along with the northern edge of the reef is the highlight of Frederick Reef.

We have visited this reef a number of times over the years, and the fishing has been superb. It has everything from great blue and striped marlin fishing, through to huge numbers of wahoo and yellowfin tuna at the seamount, to big coral trout on the jigs. At the time of year we will be visiting in 2009, the wahoo will be going crazy. At the seamount in 2007, we released over 100 wahoo and 25 yellowfin in a single day from one boat! In 2008 we had 60 wahoo hooked on fly in one day, and caught 18 on fly in a day, with the smallest at 55lbs.

We only visit Frederick Reef as part of our Coral Sea Ultimate Adventures package. And we'll only be there for a few weeks in September 2009. Utilising our 80ft mothership, anchored in the best anchorage in the Coral Sea, our 2 x 36ft sportfishing vessels, and range of 18-25ft centre consoles you will be well looked after. Some of the fishing features of Frederick Reef are as follows:-

  • Awesome jigging and trolling for very large dogtooth tuna. We've caught them here jigging and trolling up to 90kgs at the seamount.
  • Some of excellent GT fishing around the shallow reef areas for GTs. This can be seasonal depending on bait in the shallows, but is amazing when it happens.
  • Prolific wahoo in July/August/Sept, ranging from 60-100lbs, and we've had over 40 wahoo hooked up on fly in one day. We released 266 wahoo in 2 days on conventional gear, and none of those were under 60lbs, with the biggest well over 100lbs. And did we mention a double hookup on a 70lb wahoo on fly and a 500lb black marlin at the same time!!!! If you like flyfishing, wahoo, marlin or GTs, then you need to check out this reef.
  • Light tackle fishing inside the lagoons for coral trout, red bass, dogtooth tuna and and the other usual suspects is simply superb.
  • The bluewater action for wahoo, yellowfin tuna, sailfish, black and blue marlin is excellent. We've caught 3 species of billfish in a day on numerous occasions at Kenn Reef, and the mixture of these pelagic species in such abundance makes for some amazing action.
  • Marlin fishing for blue marlin between 200-400lbs and striped marlin to 150lbs is excellent in September each year.
