Marion Reef is the only reef we visit as part of our
Coral Sea Ultimate Adventures package. Marion is located approximately 220 nautical miles to the ENE of Hamilton Island on the central northern Queensland coast of Australia.
Marion is one of the largest reefs we visit, stretching nearly 26 nautical miles from north to south, and around 18 nautical miles from East to West. Due to the size of this reef, we spend between 4-6 weeks each year at Marion Reef.
Some of the features of Marion Reef are as follows:-
- The centre of the lagoon is dotted with bommies that come out of 60 metres vertically to touch the surface. The fishing and scuba diving around these pinnacles are amazing. There are around 50 of these structures in the lagoon, many we have never visited.
- Massive dogtooth tuna and GTs patrol the ledges around the reef. Deep jigging for dogtooth tuna has produced doggies around 100kgs in the past.
- The GTs at Marion are absolutley huge. The biggest GTs we have ever seen in the Coral Sea have been at Marion Reef, and these fish would have been around 80-90kgs
- The Coral Trout at Marion Reef are HUGE. We have never seen so many big Coral trout. Pretty much every week sees at least one 20kg trout landed and released on poppers or jigs, and 10kg coral trout are prolific
- The anchorage at Marion Reef is excellent, and provides ready access to some of the best crayfish holes in the Coral Sea. You can always be assured a feed of fresh crayfish at Marion.
We will be visiting Marion as part of our Coral Sea Ultimate Adventures Trips on the following dates:-
4th-10th September
16th-22nd September
22nd-28th September
