The above video clip was taken at Ribbon Reef #10 in November 2007. We generally troll a deep diving River2 Sea minnow on 50lb line between our 2 large marlin baits to catch yellowfin tuna and the like for use as live bait when targetting giant black marlin. We had actually caught 4 other smaller marlin to 150lbs on the minnow in the previous weeks, and we kept running it as the results were there. We never imagined that a huge 1000lb black marlin would eat the minnow, but it did, and after a 50 minute fight, with some serious drag applied on 50lb line, and going through 3 different anglers, we managed to leader the big fish, get a few jumps out of her, and release here none the worse for wear. We decided not to tag this fish because our other deckie was filming the whole thing!! We were only using 150lb mono leader and 120lb wire on the front of the minnow. AMAZING STUFF!!
